BTV’s Commitment to Secure Video Surveillance
At BTV Systems, we take the security of our clients very seriously, using only the most reliable video surveillance systems at the cutting-edge of technology. Our experience has shown that Chinese video surveillance systems are not only poor quality, but also pose security threats.
One company in particular, Hikvision, illustrates our concern with recommending Chinese video surveillance. The company’s products have vulnerabilities that allow hackers to gain control of your video surveillance. To show why we don’t recommend video surveillance systems from China, we’re going to look at Hikvision in depth.
Chinese Government Funding
In late 2015, Hikvision received $3 billion dollars from a government-owned Chinese bank. This is one of three government banks that finance the company and allow it to sell products around the world. While this fact in itself might not be concerning, Hikvision was strangely quiet on the topic, sending out news and information only in Chinese.
Hikvision’s American Branch
Hikvision has an American branch called EZVIZ, which claims to be a North American-based company. EZVIZ’s website makes no mention of its parent company, and Hikvision avoids claiming EZVIZ as its own.
Ties with China’s Communist Party
Also in 2015, Hikvision formed its own Communist Party committee. According to an article by IVPM, this could have a negative effect on video surveillance and privacy, and it could open Hikvision’s products up to cyber spying. In addition, many security experts consider Hikvision to have one of the worst security track records.
BTV Systems is aware of the security risks Chinese-manufactured video surveillance systems can pose. We are dedicated to informing our clients of all of their options when it comes to security and recommending only the best quality systems. Video surveillance equipment we recommend includes:
- American Fibertek
- Avigilon
- Axis
- DVTEL
- Mobotix
- MOOG
- Panasonic
- Sony
- VideoIQ
- ViewZ
